High-Risk Intersections in Denver
Here’s some bad news: according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, using data from 2017, drivers in Colorado are the 15th worst in the entire nation – tied with California. A lot of our friends and neighbors are driving faster, becoming distracted, and practicing habits that are unsafe behind the wheel.
Using information from the Denver Police Department, the five most dangerous intersections in the city, based on the number of collisions in 2017 and into 2018, are:
- West Alameda and South Santa Fe Dr.
- South Quebec St. and Leetsdale Dr.
- South Monaco St. and East Alameda Ave.
- West 6th Ave. and North Kalamath St.
- North Speer Blvd. and Auraria Pkwy.
These intersections are dangerous for a number of reasons. The way they are designed can be a factor, so can poor maintenance; but in general, drivers behave badly in these areas. You might notice more than one of these intersections feeds off a highway, so people are more likely to come off the freeway and not adjust to city streets.
Speeding or driving while distracted is not just dangerous; it can be considered negligent from a legal perspective. A reasonable driver is expected to go at speeds that are safe in a given location and to pay attention to the road. When someone drives too fast or allows himself to become distracted, other people pay the price for that recklessness – and they have a legal right to have their bills paid by that driver.
