Fatal Roll Over Accident Shuts Down Highway 36

roll over accidentMany of us know Highway 36 as the Denver-Boulder Turnpike. It is the easiest way to commute to University of Colorado Boulder from Denver. This highway used to be a toll road and was originally constructed in 1926. This highway is also vulnerable to closure when there is an accident. According to 9 News, the highway was closed recently because of a very serious car accident. There was a fatal roll over accident on eastbound 36. The highway was closed on both sides because of the severity of the crash. The reason for the accident remains unknown. There was not another car involved in the initial crash that caused the person to loose control of their SUV. However, the car when was rolling did hit another car. There was only fatality in the accident, which was the owner of the SUV, whose name is not being released. Highway 36 was closed for nearly two hours which caused quite a delay in traffic.

Roll Over Accident Statistics

Roll over accidents are not very common. However, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has identified that roll over fatalities are responsible for 1/3 of all occupant fatalities almost every year. This means that although roll over accidents are a rare thing, they are also a very deadly type of accident. Over 60% of all roll over accident fatalities were in an SUV type vehicle. Small pick up trucks accounted for 45% vehicles involved in a fatal roll over accident. Many SUV type cars have a roll over rating associated with them. This number is called a SSF which stands for a Static Stability Factor. It is based upon the vehicles center of gravity, track width and height. This creates a number that creates a reference number for the vehicles to be judged by. The general rule is that if your car has a high number that means that your car has a higher risk of roll over. A general rule of thumb is you want a wide car with a low center of gravity. An Oldsmobile sedan is less likely to roll than a Jeep wrangler. The sedan would have a lower SSF rank. This is because the sedan has a low center of gravity and is wide which in comparison to the Jeep. However, this is not very accurate and always true. Many cars who have low SSF’s can still be at risk of a roll over accident.

A Pedestrian Seriously Injured After Being Run Over

The winter season in Colorado not only can be the cause of car accidents, but also pedestrian accidents. According to the Denver Post, a man was seriously injured after he slipped while crossing a road in Niwot. The man slipped and fell when he was trying to cross 73rd Street just north of Niwot Road. There was a black Honda SUV that was headed south on 73rd. The SUV was unable to stop and ran over the pedestrian. The SUV ended up dragging the man for nearly 100 feet. The man suffered serious injuries after being dragged and had to be airlifted to a Denver hospital after police reported to the scene. The way the man was pinned under the car meant that first responders  had to lift the car off the man. The police are not citing the driver for the accident; they blame the slick conditions for the accident and injuries to the man.

Have you been seriously injured in a pedestrian car collision? Contact a Boulder car accident lawyer today if you have questions about what to do after your car accident.

There are many reasons why accidents happen, however one fact stands true for many accidents: they can have life altering affects for the individual or their family. This is especially true when cars collide with pedestrians. Because pedestrians are so much more vulnerable to serious injuries after a car collision the result of a pedestrian-car accident is often fatal. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that over 4,200 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents in 2010. This is a significant number to any family member who suffered the loss of a loved one. Pedestrian fatalities in traffic crashes account for 13% of all traffic fatalities. In 2010, 68% of pedestrian deaths occurred at night time. In the same year, 79% of those deaths to pedestrians occurred at non intersection areas, meaning non-designated pedestrian crossing areas. The majority of pedestrian-car collisions resulting in death occur in urban cities than rural towns. Most pedestrian car accidents occur when it is a clear day outside and people are out walking and enjoying the weather. However, cars have less control on winter roads and all pedestrians should be aware that stopping quickly on snow is sometimes not an option. Cross intersections with care this winter season.

Roll-over accidents occur more frequently with large trucks or light trucks than any other vehicle type. However, it is important to understand a roll-over accident can happen to anyone for a number of reasons. A roll-over accident is deemed a roll-over if the vehicle performs any of the following: a complete rollover, rolling onto its side, roof, far side and finally ending up on its wheels again, or even going on to roll further. There are a few types of roll-overs. A tripping rollover is when a vehicle is sliding sideways, and the tires strike a curb, dig into soft ground, suddenly causing a sudden lateral force that causes the car to tilt on its side. Depending on your speed a car can roll completely over or just land on its side. A collision with another vehicle or object can also cause a rollover. These occur when a narrow object causes one side of the vehicle to accelerate upwards, but not the other, causing the vehicle to rotate along its long axis resulting in a tipping action by the car. A car collision that involves a side impact can accelerate a vehicle sideways. A rollover can also occur as a vehicle crosses a ditch or steep slope. A vehicle may roll over for other reasons, such as when hitting a large obstacle with one of its wheels or when maneuvering over uneven terrain. It is always important to check your vehicle for roll-over warnings and concentrate on speed when navigating turns, curbs, or even ditches. Speed of a vehicle is a big factor for reasons cars roll-over.
